A joyous opening celebration spanning the whole borough to kick off the first day of We Are Lewisham.

Day One of Lewisham’s year as the Mayor of London’s Borough of Culture 2022 officially kicks off on 28 January. You are invited to get involved,  no matter where you are.

Day One will present a flavour of the exciting year ahead – a year that is only possible due the fantastic energy and creativity of Lewisham residents. Look out for culture on your doorstep – with outdoor performances and events popping up across the day. There are creative challenges to get stuck into and the chance to connect online – bringing people together whatever the circumstances

Wherever you are in Lewisham on 28 January, you’ll experience music, dance, culture and more.

9-10am: Wake up with live music

As you go about your day, look out for Commotions happening across the borough, celebrating the musical spirit of Lewisham.

In partnership with Lewisham-based community music groups, Trinity Laban Composition students, local music makers and our Inspired Not Tired groups, Boundless and Voices in Motion.

From 10am: Art on your doorstep

As you go about your day, look out for Lewisham artists popping up in spaces across the borough, from Deptford to Downham, presenting work with and for the local community. This day-long celebration is an invitation to get involved with art on your doorstep. From ‘STOMP!’ style workshops and reclaim sculpture-making to sing-a-longs and spoken word performances, residents will be able to make their mark during Day One.

10am-4pm: Take part in a live artwork

The UK premiere of ‘Identity Tapestry’ by artist Mary Corey March, will be created on Day One by the people of Lewisham. Lewisham residents, artists and local legends are invited to weave their identity on the Tapestry, creating a beautiful and enduring artwork representing the story of our borough, to be displayed in Lewisham Shopping Centre throughout the year.

7am-8pm: Tannoy Takeover at Lewisham Shopping Centre

Lewisham is proud of its rich musical influence – from punk to lover’s rock to grime. To celebrate Day One, Lewisham Shopping Centre will be playing music connected to the borough, including tracks from the playlist Catford Island Discs by local DJ Doo Lang. Listen out for the Lewisham Mixtape while you’re shopping on Friday 28 January.

12 Noon: Get dancing with the borough

Stop what you're doing and take part in We Are Lewisham's first Creative Challenge of 2022! At midday, schools across the borough will be dancing the official LBoC Bop choreographed by IRIE! Dance Theatre, along to the Lewisham Anthem from The Midi Music Company.

6.30-9pm: Watch Lewisham light up with familiar faces

Stop by to catch the premiere of a new short film created for We Are Lewisham. See the borough's identity and what it stands for projected onto key buildings across Lewisham. Look out for some familiar faces.

6.30pm: See us on the Piccadilly Lights!

Head to Piccadilly Circus at 6:30pm and you'll be able to look up at Lewisham. We are taking over the Piccadilly Lights with our new short film, celebrating the people of our borough and what we stand for.
