Murmuration is an installation that has been hand-crafted by the Lewisham community and curated by artists Annika Cox and Alice Burnhope.

Across our year as London Borough of Culture, monthly creative challenges were launched to inspire mass creativity and positive change. If the year has taught us anything, it’s that the people of Lewisham are incredibly creative. From music to gardening and architecture to poetry, we’ve seen skills across all kinds of art forms.

Led by Cockpit, this project celebrates craft and making. Cockpit, based in Deptford and Bloomsbury, is home to over 160 of the most exciting makers and designers working today. A voice for making in all its forms, Cockpit stands for the transformative power of craft to shape a better world.

Inspired by the African proverb “When the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind”, the installation explores themes of connection, migration, belonging, creativity and a symbol of the people of Lewisham coming together.

Murmuration has been commissioned by The Mayor’s London Borough of Culture in partnership with Cockpit

Wearable Lewisham

This wearable artwork highlights the first and last days of We Are Lewisham. As Artist in Residence for the first day of the year, Alice conducted a skill-sharing workshop with local community members at Goldsmith Community Centre.

Participants were invited to translate their love and aspirations for the borough through embroidering with thread into recycled naturally dyed fabric. These artworks have been patch-worked to create a wearable map of Lewisham that reflect the community's statement and offers a comforting embrace from the borough.
