Revolution Through Music

From the UK’s most influential sound systems to Rock Against Racism and the development of lover’s rock, dub, reggae and salsa, Revolution Through Music will celebrate the grassroots musical culture that has sprung from the borough, changing the cultural face of London.

Lewisham is home to Mercury Prize nominee Dave Okumu, Kae Tempest, MNEK and Jessie Ware, and launched the careers of Kate Bush, Blur, Dire Straits and Squeeze.

Travel through the past, present and into the future, looking at the UK’s most innovative musical talent and the rich musical heritage of Lewisham that changed the cultural face of London. Revolution Through Music spans contemporary, pop, grime, jazz, global, classical, electronic and experimental styles, offering a journey through the diverse musical talent of Lewisham’s past, present and future.

LOVE IS ATTENTION – MARCH 2022

In March 2022 Mercury Prize nominee Dave Okumu’s Love Is Attention, will see a series of eight live performances pairing high-profile artists with emerging talent.

REBEL MUSIC – MAY 2022

Linton Kwesi Johnson, Saxon Sound and Black Obsidian Sound System bring to life Lewisham’s history of activism with Rebel Music. Trace the importance of Sound System culture to Black, LGBTQ+, DIY Punk Hardcore and Rave culture communities.

BEYOND BORDERS – AUGUST 2022

In August, discover various cultural sounds in Beyond Borders, a family-friendly festival of global music taking over the Horniman Museum which explores south-east London’s jazz scene and Lewisham’s global and contemporary music communities.

UNDERGROUND LEWISHAM – OCTOBER 2022

Underground Lewisham has been curated by MOBO Award nominee Novelist to spotlight the borough’s thriving Grime, Afrobeat and Drill scene and the new genres of tomorrow. Experience the music of tomorrow at venues and pop-up spaces across the borough in October 2022.
