This class will take inspiration from Giotto’s fresco cycle created between 1303-1305 in the Scrovegni Chapel, Padua. We will translate sections of the frescoes into geometric abstractions, transcribing the scenes into shapes and modern compositions.
Students will explore the chapel’s iconic colour palette, focusing on its vibrant lapis blues and warm, pinky-orange tones. Using gouache, a versatile, opaque medium, students will layer the colours to create bold and balanced compositions. Students will learn some gilding techniques and apply imitation gold leaf to their paintings adding a luminous and radiant finish.
