The Pathé newsreel of 22 June 1948 announced that the Empire Windrush had brought 500 Jamaicans to England. There was an assumption, even among MPs, that they were all of African-Caribbean heritage. But the journey included members of other ethnic groups.
Whenever the word ‘Windrush’ is mentioned, there are assumptions that it is about matters concerning African-Caribbean people in Britain.
The virtual event on 1st June aims to dispel the thought because there were Chinese, Indo-Caribbean, and others, on the ship. Among them were individuals who had served Britain during WWII and who were returning to settle in the UK. They are members also of the Windrush Generation.
