In this step-by-step acrylic painting class, students will create a copy of a self-portrait by Vincent van Gogh. The session is inspired by Van Gogh’s distinctive style, his ability to achieve vibrancy through paint and his expressive distortion of reality.
Guided by tutor Lee Fether, students will closely examine the original portrait, strengthening their observational skills as they sketch the composition and refine proportions.
They will practise mixing the colours found in the painting, carefully matching value and hue. In copying the work, emphasis will be placed on building layered, directional brushmarks just as Van Gogh did, using strokes of colour rather than blending, to maintain vibrancy and define shape.
