Market Sites

Lewisham Market: Founded in 1906, this bustling market sits near the historic Clock Tower, erected in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Designed by architect A.R. Gough and built by S.J. Jerrard & Sons, the tower is made of Portland stone and crowned with a royal emblem. Fun fact: the clock was originally wound by hand through a tiny door at the back!

Deptford Market High Street: A historic destination featuring the famous Anchor, installed in 1988 as a tribute to Deptford’s maritime heritage and its Royal Dockyard founded by Henry VIII. Anecdote: locals fought passionately to bring the anchor back after its removal in 2013—4,000 signatures and even sea shanties at protests helped secure its return in 2018!

Douglas Way: Renowned for its eclectic mix of bric-a-brac and second-hand goods.

Giffin Square: Home to Deptford library and a variety of food traders

Catford Market: Famous for the Catford Cat, a giant fibreglass feline perched over the Catford Centre since 1974. Designed by Brutalist architects Owen Luder and Rodney Gordon, this mischievous cat has survived redevelopment threats thanks to community campaigns. It even sports a Cheshire Cat grin and rests its paw on the “F” of Catford—a true local icon.

Sydenham: Popular for its beautiful flower stalls and friendly atmosphere.

Blackheath & Grove Park: Smaller community market stalls offering local goods and produce.

Vision for the Future

Lewisham Council is committed to bringing more life back to our markets, restoring their vibrancy and ensuring they remain central to community life. We aim to attract new traders and expand the variety of goods and services available. Pitches are currently available at Deptford Market and Catford Market, and we invite traders to join us in shaping the future of Lewisham’s markets, and we aim to have some new markets coming soon.

We are also inviting you to bring your ideas. If you want to run a market, we will make sure you get the support you need to get started.

Markets are a great platform to start your own business. We encourage young entrepreneurs to take the first step. Whether you are launching a food stall, selling handmade crafts, or testing a new concept, our markets offer an affordable and supportive environment to grow your ideas.
